Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis is a diagnostic test performed in conjunction with in vitro fertilization. PGD or “single gene diagnosis” is a state-of-the-art procedure used to determine if the embryos that result from IVF are free from genetic diseases or chromosomal abnormalities. These conditions can interfere with embryo implantation or result in miscarriages.
PGD is also helpful for patients with unexplained infertility, male factor infertility or unsuccessful IVF cycles. It is important to note that PGD does not test for every chromosomal or genetic defect and is not done as part of a conventional IVF cycle. PGD is specialized testing and must be requested by the patient or the patient’s physician.
The two biggest concerns for people considering In Vitro Fertilization and PGD are the cost and the likelihood of a successful pregnancy. There are many factors that go into determining the cost of IVF and other fertility services. The good news is that many couples have health care insurance that will cover an initial consultation and diagnostic testing. Only about 30% of insurance plans cover fertility treatments such as IVF and IUI.

If you could select your child’s gender
There are a number of reasons that a couple might want to choose the gender of a child. There are some genetic diseases that are gender-specific. Medically speaking, a couple may choose gender selection to avoid giving birth to a child with a sex-linked genetic disorder. On a more personal level, a couple may want to select the gender of a child for “family balancing” — to create a balance between the number of boys and girls in their family.
