Every year thousands of people seek medical assistance because they want a child, but have not been successful in getting pregnant even after a year or more of unprotected sexual activity. Infertility strikes both men and women equally, so that both partners need to be involved in the diagnostic and treatment process. Factors that may affect a person’s inability to conceive include:

  • A woman’s age
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Problems affecting ovarian function
  • Male factors such as low sperm count or poor sperm motility
  • Diseases such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, fibroids, tubal disease

Coping with infertility can lead to frustration, anger, and a sense of loss. The best way to deal with these feelings is to become educated about the causes of infertility, the variety of treatments that are available and their costs so that you can make an informed decision about your individual treatment plan.

What are IVF and IUI?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is one treatment option that is often used in cases where male infertility or problems with ovulation are an issue. IUI is a low-tech option which involves placing a concentrated sperm sample into the uterus via a transfer catheter. Fertility medications are often used in conjunction with IUI in cases involving irregular ovulation.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), on the other hand, is more of a high-tech treatment. It involves the removal of mature eggs and fertilizing them outside of the woman’s body. If sperm motility or a low sperm count are an issue, artificial insemination can be used to inject the sperm directly into the eggs instead of letting nature take its course. After fertilization occurs, the embryos are transferred back to the woman’s uterus.
