9 Fun Summer Activities to Do with Your Baby

Summer means longer days, which equals more time to spend with your baby outside in the sunshine. Early morning or evening activities are ideal because the sun will still be out, but the temperatures won’t be as scorching. Here are a few summer family activities to keep you and your family busy and entertained.

Go for a Swim

Nothing feels quite as refreshing as a dip in the pool, and it is never too early to get your baby acclimated to the water. Find a neighborhood pool or local recreation center and gently introduce your baby to the water. Try to find a place or go at a time that isn’t overly crowded. If your baby is over 6 months old, make sure to apply sunscreen to your baby’s skin as necessary, if you’re using an outdoor pool. While there is much debate over the safety of sunscreen, for children over six months it is safe, and recommended, to apply. If your baby is younger than six months, then it’s best to keep your baby in the shade until their skin has had a chance to mature.

Spend Time at the Library

Another terrific way to beat the heat, while not increasing the size of your utility bill, is to visit your local library. Take your little one to story time, spend time reading a book to him or her, or spend time reading a book or listening to an audiobook while your little one relaxes in the cool ambiance of the library. The community library is a proven perfect destination for summer baby activities.

Go on a Walk

Unless the heat is too oppressive, take a spin around the block or even venture a trek on a walking path with your little one. The fresh air and exercise elevate the mind, body, and spirit, while the vitamin D-boosting benefits of getting a bit of sunshine are good for you and your baby. Stay hydrated and again, keep sunscreen close at hand to protect your skin and baby’s, too.

Head to the Zoo

Little kids and adults alike love animals, and the zoo offers the ideal blend of plenty of opportunities for fun animal viewings, lots of exercise, and something for every age group. This is a great place for summer family activities if you’re bringing more than one child because there it’s family-friendly for all ages.

Visit a Farm

Whether you want to show your little one how to pick berries or you’re interested in showing your son or daughter what it is like to live and work on a farm, find an accessible and friendly farm for your next family outing. Bring a blanket and find a shady spot to have a picnic lunch.

Hit the Beach

If you’re lucky enough to live next to the coast, plan a relaxing beach day for you and your baby. Lather up with sunscreen, pack plenty of food and drinks, tote a beach umbrella, and spend time at the seaside with your little one. If you’re not located near the ocean, find a lake or reservoir with a sandy beach to create your own little slice of paradise.

Blow Bubbles on the Grass

Little ones love bubbles, so grab a big blanket or sheet, spread it out on the grass in the shade, and blow bubbles with your baby. Sometimes the simplest joys bring the most pleasure.

Go to a Movie

Summertime is the perfect time to take advantage of special kid-friendly showings at certain movie theaters in your area. Many theaters offer either special sections for parents with little kids (i.e., no one to complain about noise issues) or discounted tickets that make it a little easier on the budget if you have to walk out of the theater due to a crying baby. Cinepolis based out of Mexico has taken kid-friendly movie experiences a step further by debuting Cinepolis Junior. These locations will have a play area in front of the screen at the theater which will have a jungle gym and beanbag chairs for the perfect kid-friendly day.

Make a Smoothie

Take advantage of the yummy fruit and vegetables available at summertime farmer’s markets and create the ultimate smoothie. As long as the ingredients are appropriate, make a smoothie that you and your baby can enjoy together.

Summertime is the ideal time of the year to create lasting memories with your family and children. Get outside, enjoy the sunshine and bright, cheerful vibes of the summer, and bring a smile to the face of your partner and children!
